Zimbabwe Republic Police on Monday jailed an officer over comments he made in 2016 suggesting that out of power former President Robert Mugabe was too old to rule a country.

Sergeant Thompson Joseph Mloyie also stands accused of having questioned Mugabe's choice of woman for a marriage.

He appeared before one Superintended Makunike being accused of contravening paragraph 35 of the Schedule of the Police Act (Chapter 11:10).

Paragraph 35 of the Schedule of the Police Act (Chapter 11:10) prohibits members of the police force from ‘acting in an unbecoming manner prejudicial to discipline or reasonably likely to bring discredit to the Police Service.'

Mloyie, who convicted February 28 was sentenced to 10 days in prison.

The police internal tribunal heard that sometime in March 2016, Mloyie said: "President Mugabe achembera haachakwanisi kutonga nyika ino. Ndiye arikukonzera (sic) kutambura munyika ino uye akaroora hure Grace Mugabe," which the ZRP translated to mean "‘President Mugabe is too old and incapable of leading this country and is the cause of the suffering going on in this country and is married to a prostitute, Grace Mugabe."

Makunike said Mloyie's conduct discredited the Police Service.

Mloyi, who was represented by Jeremiah Bamu and Noble Chinhanu of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, was arrested on March 5 2016 and detained at Cranborne Police Station.

He was charged with undermining the authority of or insulting the President in contravention of Section 33 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
