THE Zanu PF-aligned Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (Zicosu) has launched the #EDHasMyVote campaign at tertiary institutions, as part of efforts to drum up support for President Emmerson Mnangagwa ahead of this year's elections.
Zicosu secretary-general Tapiwa Marongere said their campaign, which was targeted at two-thirds of students at tertiary institutions, has already taken them to various parts of the country.
"The issue of the #EDHasMyVote Campaign as students is a unique thing and we are really behind it and supporting it as the students' body. We are taking a leading role as the students' body and we have many reasons why as students we are saying we must vote for Mnangagwa," he said.
The Zanu PF youth league recently launched a similar campaign in Bulawayo, with provincial youth chairperson Khumbulani Mpofu saying the #EDHasMyVote Campaign was approved by the politburo as a workable tool for youths.
"For example, within 100 days when he was in power, he has appointed a minister who has students at heart, who listens to the students and who has managed to solve many of the students' issues such as the slashing fees for students on attachment.
"A few days ago, we were invited to the national students' investment programme where the [Higher and Tertiary Education] minister [Amon Murwira] and the President had time with students and investors. What motivates us as students is that they notice that students are the major stakeholders," Marongere said.
Zicosu treasurer-general, Godknows Mdari said that the students' body was also setting up structures in nurse training institutions to increase its foothold.
"We want all students in this train to ensure that Zanu PF wins the elections. We are convinced as the student's body that the ruling party is going to win elections.
Students used to have a negative attitude towards Zanu PF under former President Robert Mugabe, but today we believe things have changed, the confidence is there with Mnangagwa, who has proved to be a messenger with a message of change," Mdari said.
