Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has urged residents to assist the Council by ensuring that they board from designated transport sites and from licenced operators as a way of reducing congestion and disorder that has arisen on the City roads prior to the development of Egodini Mall.
Senior Public Relations Officer, Nesisa Mpofu said the City is working on the congestion situation and the strategies to deal with it have been implemented.
"The City of Bulawayo is constantly reviewing the situation to ensure that there is no congestion or disorder on the City's roads because the move to the new sites is to pave way for the construction of the Egodini Mall and it was inevitable,"she said.
She added that ways of dealing with congestion on the 6th Avenue have been implemented.
"Concerns pertaining to traffic flow on 6th Avenue, have been received and strategies to ease up the area have been implemented. The City Council with law enforcement agents and stakeholders has been working to address these challenges," she said.
"We note with concern that the chaos or disorder is being caused by unlicenced or illegal transport operators and we encouraging residents to board from the designated sites and also from licensed transport operators and avoid illegal and drop off points," she said.
Mpofu added that BCC is in constant discussion with registered transport companies and they will continue to work together in bringing sanity in the City.
"We are continually working with registered transport companies to ensure that all transport operators use designated sites and are also designated using holding zones," she said
Mpofu added that stakeholders are requested to adhere to these new termini sites so that there can be order restoration in the City.
"We will continuously review the situation to ensure that there is order and sanity in the City of Bulawayo. We also requested for adherence to the new termini sites and any offending operators and commuters will be arrested and prosecuted in terms of the law," she said.
Mpofu urged motorists to use avenues that are not highly congested like the 6th Avenue.
"We would like to advise motorists to avoid high congestions areas such as 6th Avenue. They can enter Luveve Road either through 10th Avenue to Basch Street or 9th Avenue to 8th Avenue Extension and then to Basch Street,"she said.
