Walking in a Winter Wonderland: Nelson Chamisa's Fables and Lies
10 Jun 2018 at 11:23hrs | Views
This winter, we are hearing many enchanting fables. "Zimbabwe will have a currency stronger than the dollar!"Nelson Chamisa is telling us. "An economy like Switzerland", He exclaims!
He is no fool, Advocate Chamisa. In fact, he is an extremely intelligent individual. So either he thinks we're all stupid, or he is creating an alternative universe of fables and lies which he thinks will help him get elected president.
His lies are so ridiculous, he was recently accused of living in "Alice in Wonderland" on the BBC. We were told that we would have bullet trains which could travel from Bulawayo to Harare in a mere half an hour, thereby breaking the world record for train speeds (by two). Now I know he doesn't like the Chinese, but the Japanese must have been rolling around when they heard this. We were told there would be WIFI for every goat in Zimbabwe; an airport in every village no less!
His manifesto released this week (with the smiling faces of Mugabe's closest supporters standing next to him!) was full of hyperbole and nonsense.
And then there is the incessant lying. "I was so touched when I went to Dr Nkomo's Matsheumhlophe house. I was going there to see the history of this nation. However, the family told me one thing, they said ever since the death of Dr Nkomo I am the first national leader to visit the house, they even offered to give me Dr Nkomo's traditional sceptre (intonga)," Wrong! Joshua Nkomo's son, Sibangilizwe, refuted this and said that none of the family members knew about Mr Chamisa's visit to the museum while he fumed about the claims that they offered the MDC-T leader his intonga.
Chamisa also claimed he was received warmly by members of the Trump administration. He claimed he was offered 15 billion dollars by America if he were to win in July. Wrong and wrong! Complete and utter lies. Lies he has now admitted to.
Then there is the Kagame affair. As a student of African Economics we have studied and admired the Rwandan miracle. First, I was a little perturbed by Chamisa's embrace of the guy's democratic credentials. Kagame is no democrat. As we move into the new era we should be embracing real democracy, real freedoms, and real political change; not superficial talk and strongman leadership. But the lies are what really bothered me. He claimed to have advised Kagame on his ICT policy. Kagame even had to come out and refute the claims on Twitter. Chamisa's pathetic attempt to say "but look we met", is like the time I shook hands with a South African cricketer in Harare. I did not take credit for his performances for the rest of his international career.
We are in a new order in Zimbabwe, or as our president likes to say, a new dispensation. And in this new Zimbabwe, the truth must be taken seriously. If this was a real democracy, the media would have crushed Chamisa for his obsessive falsehoods and fairy tale policies. He complains of the state media but what he doesn't realise is that they are so unprofessional, they have hardly taken him to pieces on his candidacy which has become nothing short of a national embarrassment.
And I haven't even mentioned his new alliance with Mugabe!
So with Grace and Bob backing an incessant liar, I urge Zimbabweans, in the spirit of our new democracy to make your voices heard. On July 30th, say yes to the truth, democracy and progress; and say no to Chamisa and Mugabe!
