BUHERA South legislator Joseph Chinotimba will contest for a senatorial seat in 2023 and leave room for younger cadres to carry on with the work he has started in the constituency. Chinotimba said this while interacting with aspiring candidates from various political parties at the nomination court last week who suggested that he was too old to be a Member of Parliament come 2023.
"I am left with only one term as a Member of the National Assembly. After this, I will be moving on to Senate. I want to start grooming the person who will take over the work that I have started in Buhera South and continue working for the people. So come 2023, God willing, I will seek to be elected into Senate," he said.
He said he wanted to make sure the person who took over from him would work as hard as he had done to develop the constituency. Chinotimba has been MP for Buhera South since 2013 and has been touted as one of the few MPs who have have worked hard to represent their constituencies in Parliament and empower the electorate.
He said hard work was the key to the support he had garnered in Buhera South and urged other MPs to work hard to create a better life for the people.
"We need to work for our constituencies and the nation. We shouldn't go into Parliament for the betterment of the party but for the betterment of the people. Political parties are not what the people are after; they want a person who will empower them - a person who will bring change to their lives. They don't worry about the party but they worry about the person who is representing that party," he said.
"In Buhera, people are happy with the work that l have done and this will make them choose me and Zanu-PF all the time." Chinotimba said there were MPs who had left office with no evidence that they had represented the people of Buhera South.
"If you want to go to Parliament just to get access to funds, you are wrong. You are a servant of the people and therefore you should listen to the people.
"My home area was once looked down on as a backward area which was seen as a source for housemaids or herdboys, but not anymore. We have made sure that every child who has passes his or her secondary education is sent to college to get a better life," he said.
Chinotimba said work on the construction of a 1, 7km stretch of road at Murambinda Growth Point was at an advanced stage. The 1, 7km will go round Murambinda Growth Point shops and stretch to the Chivhu-Nyazura Highway.
