A SUSPECTED pickpocket who is based in South Africa allegedly killed a man he was trying to steal from after he caught him in action.
This came to light at the appearance of Bongani Dube (33) of Tsholotsho, Nata area who was arrested last week, facing murder as defined by Section 47 of the Criminal Codification and Reform Act, before Plumtree resident magistrate Taurai Manwere.
He was remanded in custody to 11 July and advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
In his statement, Dube admitted to the charges but denied having an intention to kill the now deceased Stanford Ndlovu.
"I admit to the charges but I had no intention to kill him," said Dube in court.
Prosecutor Elisha Mazorodze told the court that on 23 June last year Dube was at Ndutshwa General Dealer in Madlambuzi in Plumtree.
The now deceased walked into the shop intending to buy some groceries.
While still at the counter, Dube allegedly tried to pickpocket him but an alert Ndlovu caught him still in action.
A misunderstanding arose leading in Dube allegedly assaulting him with fists.
He allegedly went on to arm himself with a knobkerrie and assaulted Ndlovu repeatedly all over the body until he collapsed.
Dube allegedly continued assaulting him and he was only restrained by other customers who were in the shop who tried to resuscitate Ndlovu who was then unconscious.
Ndlovu was ferried to Plumtree District Hospital where he was referred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo where he was admitted but eventually died two weeks later.
After committing the offence, Dube allegedly skipped the border to South Africa.
However, he was arrested last week after it was discovered that he was back into the country.
