Zimbabwe yet to decide on BlackBerry services
The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) will this month decide on whether to give Econet and Telecel the green light to offer BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) services to their subscribers, an official has said.
Early last year, Econet and Telecel sought approval from the regulatory authority to offer BBM services to their subscribers.
The BlackBerry Messenger service, which was an instant hit in Europe and the US upon inception, is an instant messaging platform that allows users of the smart phone to privately exchange messages which are untraceable by the authorities.
Users can instantly pass text messages, pictures and other files without incurring charges from their network provider.
POTRAZ director general engineer, Mr Charles Sibanda, said they would be concluding discussions soon.
""Right now I cannot comment on that issue because we are still discussing with the concerned parties," he said.
"But in less than a month we should be able to give an official position and details."
