The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) is headed for a showdown with the chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio on Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement Honourable Justice Mayor Wadyajena seeking his removal from the committee.
After a grilling appearance before the Portfolio Committee, GMAZ is taking another route widely viewed as a measure to avoid further probe.
In a letter, Wintertons as the legal representative of GMAZ has asked the Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda to remove the Gokwe-Nembudziya legislator Cde Wadyajena as chairman of the committee.
The matter emanates from a media alert issued on the 2nd of April where GMAZ invited media to cover their committee appearance which failed to take off.
Honourable Wadyajena later clarified through a tweet posted on the same date that there was no such meeting, guided on the fact that he is empowered to officially communicate any such issues regarding the committee.
GMAZ through their legal representative accuses the Portfolio Committee chairman of tweeting what the committee is expected to discuss as well as rebuking the conduct of the organisation on social media, noting that this casts aspersions on his impartiality and throws questions on his integrity and ability to properly chair the meeting in a non-partisan manner.
The letter also reads; "Our client hereby reserves it's right and hereby gives notice of its intention to apply, through its legal representation, for the recusal of Mr Justice Mayor Wadyajena from the chairmanship or membership of the committee if the committee is still interested in meeting our client".
Wadyajena, however, said he has not been furnished with a copy of the legal letter from GMAZ stating that he will seek guidance from the National Assembly leader.
When they appeared before the committee, GMAZ officials were ordered to bring documentary proof relating to the grain procurement, foreign currency allocations by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe from January to March 2019, proof of wheat acquittals, names and contacts of suppliers and transporters, donations that the millers did during that period and several other issues pertaining to wheat and grain importation.
