A total of 34 people cheated death when a Greyhound cross-border bus travelling from South Africa to Zimbabwe was burnt to a shell about 35 km along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo road on Monday Morning.
The fire is suspected to have started in the engine. Passengers and the bus crew escaped with their lives while everything that was in the vehicle was reduced to ashes.
The R4.5 million double decker luxury bus burst into flames in Mtetengwe area at around 7am.
The police officer commanding Beitbridge district Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo said the driver reported that the dashboard lights suddenly went off and he was alarmed to see flames shooting from the rear of the bus where the engine is located.
The unnamed driver stopped the bus, opened the door and passengers scampered out of the vehicle.
The incident comes a few months after 42 people were burnt to death while twenty seven others sustained injuries after a Musina-bound bus they were travelling in caught fire near West Nicholson in November last year.
The Brooklyn Bus accident which occurred at the 181 kilometres peg along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road, is suspected to have been caused by a gas cylinder that exploded.
