FULL TEXT: New Maintenance of Peace and Order Bill

The Parliament of Zimbabwe  has invited  the public to comment on the new Maintenance of Peace and Order Bill which is set to replace the Public Order and Security Act.

Commenting on the Bill Human Rights lawyer Fadzayi Mahere said, "When all is said and done, there can be no doubt that the new POSA is the latest installment of fake reforms by our Govt which is hell bent on limiting freedom and political space. It's not the sort of law that points towards a genuine effort to change."

Exiled Professor Jonathan Moyo said, "In some critical ways the new POSA is far worse, especially considering that the old POSA was based on the old Constitution, which was itself defective, whereas the new POSA (renamed MOPO) is supposed to be based on the new Constitution, which has a progressive Bill of Rights!"
