Human Rights Watch Southern Africa Director Dewa Mavhinga has sensationally claimed that the state is retraining some details from the Zimbabwe National Army who will soon be deployment in army uniforms.
Tweeted Mavhinga on Wednesday, "Breaking News: Hundreds of Zimbabwe soldiers reportedly undergoing 3 weeks training at 1 Commando in Harare 4 redeployment in police uniforms! What is happening?"
Mavhinga's tweet fed into speculation that there might be something happening inside the military as evidenced by a huge convoy of armoured trucks that were seen at on the move in Harare early this week.
However Mavhinga also received a lot of backlash form Zimbabweans who accused him of peddling fake news in the hope of getting Zimbabwe isolated so that he continues his donor funded work.
One user said, "So you will prefer to tarnish the image of your own country and get people to suffer from the effects of sanctions only because you want to continue enjoying donor funds? May the God of Heavens punish you and your household. Hamunzwiwo tsitsi here nekutambura kwevana veZimbabwe."
Journalist Brighton musonza said, "But Dewa Mavhinga; One Commando Baracks in Harare has NO military training facilities. It is NOT a base military training camp. You need to probe more your source on the accuracy of this information. There are football pitches at Commando One and drill parade facilities."
