Bindura mayor Brian Kembo yesterday gave in to ZANU PF's demands of ordering every mayor to attend to the unveiling of the statue of Mbuya Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana in Harare.
Kembo was among the thousands who were gathered by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in defiance of COVID-19 safety protocols.
The mayor was blasted by his followers on Facebook after he posted his picture on the statue without wearing a mask.
"Where is your mask? asked Godknows Rusere.
"You have just proven the point that if you don't fall for something you fall for anything..you have fallen for this nonsense ..Check yourself," reads Chenayimoyo Zimbabweyauya's message.
Kembo defended himself saying, "I am a man of all people including my enemies and those who think like you concerning me."
Others blasted Kembo saying he was worshipping idols.
"You are not a believer. How can you compromise your faith for lousy votes? God hates idolatry and he hates people who appreciate idolatry," Choto Ellay wrote.
Kembo responded, "l am not just a believer, yes l am a politician who expects votes from various people of different beliefs."
Some said he was in it for money.
Kembo became mayor after Chamisa's Carlos Tokyo was recalled last year.
