THE latest Economist Global Liveability Index has adjudged Harare among the worst cities in the world.

Zimbabwe's capital was ranked at number 133 out of 140 cities in the survey that considered factors such as stability, infrastructure, cash availability and a vibrant healthcare system.

Damascus was adjudged the world's least liveable city, followed by Lagos in Nigeria, Port Moresby (Papau New Guinea), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Algiers (Algeria), Tripoli (Libya), Karachi (Pakistan), Harare, Douala (Cameroon) and Caracas (Venezuela).

"Harare scored poorly in terms of stability with a 40, healthcare system (12,5), infrastructure (35,7). Culture and environment (44,4) and education (58,3), showing positive marks in this area," the survey noted.

"In Harare, quality housing is available for the wealthy only and quality private education is available in the city, but it is costly and takes good teachers away from Harare's impoverished government schools."

Auckland in New Zealand was adjudged as the world's most liveable city, followed by Osaka (Japan) and Adelaide (Australia).
