Senior citizen steals whiskey blames evil spirits

A Mutoko senior citizen left Mutoko magistrates courts in stitches after he blamed evil spirits for shoplifting.
Conrad Nyandoro (65) pleaded with Magistrate Elijah Sibanda not to send him to jail, but to consider a fine and restitution.
The magistrate gave in to his plea and slapped him with $21 000 fine and an additional two months was suspended on condition that he restitutes TM $1000.
Prosecutor Nathan Majuru told the court that Nyandoro entered TM Mutoko supermarket and walked around grocery shelves pretending to look for groceries.
Upon reaching the alcohol section, he quickly stuffed two bottles of Two-Keys Whiskey into a huge over-coat he was wearing. He then moved next to the next shelf where he picked up a 500g jar of Mama Jam which he hid into his coat again.
Nyandoro did not know that he was under the watchful eye of security guard Innocent Chisindi.
As Nyandoro walked past the tills, security guard Chisindi approached him and asked to search him. One of the whiskey bottles fell from his coat and broke, another was recovered together with a jar of jam.
He was arrested and taken to the police.
Asked why the committed the offence, Nyandoro said evil spirits had come over him and made him to commit the offence, prompting court orderlies, prison officials and interpreters to burst in laughter.
