AFTER a seemingly bad day in business, a self-proclaimed commercial sex worker from Bulawayo teamed up with a male patron to steal a fellow imbiber's cellphone.
This was heard when Samantha Sibanda (31) and Austin Moyo (21) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Busani Sibanda charged with theft.
They both pleaded guilty to the charge and were each sentenced to 10 months in jail.
Each of the accused's four months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining six months were suspended on condition that they each perform 210 hours of community service at Magwegwe Primary School and Sauerstown Police Station respectively. When asked why they committed the offence, they both said they wanted to raise money to buy food.
The court heard that on 13 December 2022 and at around 2am Sibanda and Moyo were at one of the drinking spots in the city centre when the latter searched a fellow patron Nomsa Khumalo (20) and stole her cellphone, a Huawei 37.
It is reported that after stealing the cellphone Moyo gave it to Sibanda. Realising that his cellphone had been stolen Khumalo notified the security guards who searched the two accused and Sibanda was found with the phone.
The two were then taken to Bulawayo Central Police Station where a charge of theft was filed against them.
The value of the recovered cellphone is US$130.
