The re-emergence of commuter omnibuses (kombis) has been on the rise across the nation despite them being banned in preference to registered Zimbabwe United Passengers (ZUPCO) vehicles.
Kombis are slowly crawling back on our roads, most of them branded as part of various associations, however commuters are confused as the re- emergence of kombis have not brought any positive change.
Chairman of Passenger Association of Zimbabwe Tafadzwa Goliati said they recognize only three kombi associations namely GHACO, ZUDAC and UCOZ.
In an interview with Bulawayo24.com Goliati remarked that despite the new associations, nothing much has changed as commuters continue to be ripped off.
He said, " We are not happy with the fares at all, they charge according to weather patterns and rise of demand, during the rainy season fares hiked at the expense of citizens who are already suffering from the cost of living".
One kombi driver who chose to be anonymous blamed bad roads which worsen during the rainy season henceforth the rise of their fares.
He said, "This is the job l have only known for my whole life and l can not stop because l have a family to feed and we hike prices in this season because our roads worsen because rain so it will be risky driving in those conditions".
