POLICE in Gweru are investigating a case in which a 66-year-old woman from Kopje low density suburb lost a truck, a Toyota Hilux, to thieves during the night.
The woman, Ms Elizabeth Lawy, had left the truck parked inside her yard on the previous night only to find it missing on the following morning.
Acting police spokesperson for the Midlands province, Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident.
"The circumstances are that on Sunday night, Ms Elizabeth Lawy, of Kopje, Gweru, arrived at her house at about 10.30pm and parked her vehicle, a Toyota Hilux 2400 truck within the yard. She locked her gate and the vehicle before retiring to bed," he said.
Asst Insp Mahoko said during the night, an unknown thief used an unkown object to cut the padlock, which was used to lock the gate.
Asst Insp Mahoko said the suspect also used an unknown object to unlock the truck doors before driving it off.
"The matter was only discovered yesterday morning when Ms Lawy woke up at about 4.30am and discovered her truck missing. She then reported the matter to the police at Gweru Central Police Station," he said.
Asst Insp Mahoko said police have since launched a manhunt for the suspected car thief, who is still at large. He said police were also yet to recover the truck.
"We are appealing to members of the public who might have information leading to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the vehicle to approach any nearest police station. We also encourage members of the public to make use of our suggestion boxes," he said.
The value of the stolen truck is estimated at $5 000.
