Maureen Kademaunga, a Member of Parliament for Sunningdale from the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has been arrested on charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property. She is scheduled to appear in court today.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed her arrest and that of two others, Ward 10 councillor Clayd Mashozhera and Daudi Jessub. They are implicated in an attack on three complainants that occurred on August 23, 2023, near Metro Peech in Harare. During the incident, a Toyota Spacio vehicle was allegedly burnt, and the suspects were said to have used multiple vehicles, including one belonging to Kademaunga.
Jessub has already appeared in court, and Kademaunga's lawyer, Darlington Marange, stated that his client denies both charges.
The charges stem from an incident on August 22 when Kademaunga was allegedly part of a group that burnt a Toyota Spacio belonging to a Zanu-PF candidate and assaulted several individuals using various weapons.
The CCC has criticized the use of legal actions against its members who participated in last month's elections and accused President Mnangagwa of increasing repression and victimization against the party's leaders, activists, members, supporters, and citizens who voted for Nelson Chamisa and CCC.
