Bindura Town Council Mayor, Jacob Gwature (aged 39), and his associate, Jonathan Kapasi (aged 49), have been arrested on allegations of fraud involving US$6,970.
According to the national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the suspects, operating under the company name Pamhodzi Rainbow Network in Zimbabwe, received £5,000 (equivalent to US$6,970) from Kitchen Table Charities Trust in the United Kingdom for the purpose of drilling a borehole and installing a solar system to power the borehole at stand number 1305 Budiriro 1, Harare.
However, they failed to fulfill their part of the agreement and did not carry out the borehole drilling or solar system installation. The funds were deposited into the suspects' local bank account by Misheck Mlambo, who represented Kitchen Table Charities Trust.
Following a complaint, the police arrested the suspects, and they have appeared in court. They were remanded in custody until September 26, 2023, for a bail application.
