The Bulawayo City Council has issued a warning to residents regarding the unauthorized cultivation of crops in prohibited areas. Town Clerk Mr. Christopher Dube, in a statement, emphasized that this practice is in violation of Section 13 (1) of the Protection of Lands and Natural Resources By-Laws.
According to the bylaws, it is prohibited to cultivate within 30 meters of the edges of spring vleis, sponges, marshes, swamps, reed beds, or within 30 meters of a high flood level of any water body that has been artificially conserved, or within 10 meters along a road verge.
Mr. Dube also mentioned that if individuals are found to be in breach of these bylaws, their crops may be subject to destruction. Under Section 10(4) of the By-Laws, the council will not provide compensation for any crops that are destroyed.
To demarcate these restricted areas, white stone beacons will be installed. Cultivators who exceed these stone beacons may have their crops destroyed.
Mr. Dube urged residents to refrain from engaging in illegal cultivation to avoid any potential disappointment.
