GWANDA Municipality is putting up four tower lights in Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle, a development that has brought relief to residents.

Gwanda Town mayor, Councillor Thulani Moyo said the project was part of efforts to improve service delivery in the area.

"We are in the process of putting up four tower lights in Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle Suburb. Two tower lights are being set up as we speak and then will move on to the other two next month. This is part of efforts to improve service delivery in the suburb. We want to leave no one and no place behind as council in our service delivery.

"In addition to that we are working on modalities to develop the area further. As council we received some funds from the Government last year towards servicing of Garikai area. We are in the tendering process for street lighting while we are waiting for a recommendation from the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe for the tendering process for roads and sewer," he said.

Mr Moyo said once the tendering process is complete the local authority will work on the timeous completion of the projects.

A resident from the area, Mr Liberty Sibanda said it excites them to see that work to develop their suburb has started.

"We are glad as residents to see that some work is being done to service our area. We have been calling for this development for a long time. Let's hope that soon we will see development in street lighting, roads maintenance and sewer reticulation," he said.

The Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle houses were constructed in 2013 but the area has not been serviced forcing residents to live without water, sewer reticulation, electricity and roads.

The residents then decided to take matters into their own hands and mobilised resources to develop their area.

Some of the residents have managed to install a sewer system and connect water in some of the houses. The municipality will reimburse residents who have used their money. Those who still do not have water are buying water from their neighbours. The Garakai/Hlalani Kuhle housing scheme in Gwanda has 530 houses.
