Fresh Kambucha Private Limited, a beverages manufacturer, has distanced itself from counterfeit products that have saturated the market and damaged the company's reputation. Kambucha is produced through the fermentation of tea, sugar, ginger, and yeast.
In an interview with NewsDay, Felo Felo, the head of marketing at Fresh Kambucha, expressed concern that illegitimate entities were selling imitation beverages under their company name. He clarified that Fresh Kambucha Private Limited is a registered company, complying with all necessary legal requirements, and has a verifiable address. In contrast, other companies selling alleged Kambucha products lack proper contact information and addresses on their packaging.
Last week, the government included Kambucha as part of its campaign against drug and substance abuse, even though it is classified as an herbal drink, aphrodisiac, energy drink, or supplementary food. Reports suggest some people have used it as an intoxicant. Masvingo council recently prohibited its workers from consuming Kambucha during working hours.
However, Felo contended that Kambucha drinks labeled as #1, #2, #3, and Manyuchi Power contain only 0.5% alcohol and should not be classified as alcoholic beverages. He mentioned that they are in the process of introducing a new product, Kambucha Lite, with an 8.05% alcohol content, pending proper documentation from relevant authorities. The company has also made changes to its branding to combat counterfeit products.
Other types of legitimate Kambucha are imported from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The popularity of this fermented drink surged during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it was believed to be an effective remedy for respiratory diseases.
