Masaraure sentencing deferred

The sentencing of union leader and activist Obert Masaraure has been postponed by Harare Regional magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka until Friday.
In his plea for leniency, Masaraure's legal representative, Tapiwa Muchineripi, emphasized that Masaraure is a first-time offender and should be given the opportunity to reform.
"We urge the court to consider a sentence that does not exceed a fine, minimal imprisonment, or community service," Muchineripi stated.
The charges against Masaraure stem from his social media posts on the union's X handle, where he advocated for the release of activist Robson Chere. Chere was arrested in connection with the death of Artuz member Roy Issa in 2016. Issa reportedly fell to his death from the seventh floor of a Harare hotel.
While an initial inquiry into Issa's death found no evidence of foul play, the police reopened the case and charged Masaraure and Chere with murder.
