A senior leader of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (Zapu) has criticized President Emmerson Mnangagwa's administration, alleging that it perpetuates a culture of vindictiveness and holds grudges against opponents, reminiscent of the late Robert Mugabe's era.

A recent example of this alleged vindictiveness occurred when Mnangagwa reportedly disregarded calls to confer heroine status on former Bulawayo provincial affairs minister Eunice Sandi Moyo following her passing. Sandi Moyo, aged 78, passed away at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo after battling hypertension.

Despite her contributions to Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, Sandi Moyo was denied the recognition accorded to other Zanu-PF figures. This decision has drawn criticism from Zapu, with the party asserting that Sandi Moyo's involvement in the struggle should not be overlooked due to political differences.

Speaking at Sandi Moyo's memorial service in Bulawayo, Zapu's secretary-general lamented the lack of recognition for individuals like Sandi Moyo, who played pivotal roles in the country's history. He emphasized the need to honor the contributions of nationalist figures, irrespective of their political affiliations.

The Zapu representative highlighted the struggles faced by women like Sandi Moyo, drawing parallels with other overlooked female revolutionaries. He questioned the criteria used by the government to confer hero status, particularly in light of controversial decisions regarding certain individuals.

Furthermore, the Zapu leader criticized former party members who have aligned themselves with Zanu-PF, urging them to speak out against injustices. He called for unity within Zapu and emphasized the importance of reclaiming the party's legacy.

Meanwhile, government officials and Zanu-PF members expressed condolences for Sandi Moyo's passing, acknowledging her contributions to the nation. However, some observers noted the political controversies that marked Sandi Moyo's career, including her dismissal from Zanu-PF and subsequent involvement with the National Patriotic Front.

Sandi Moyo's death has reignited discussions about forgiveness and reconciliation in Zimbabwe, with calls for political leaders to prioritize national unity over personal grievances.
