Victor Matemadanda, the outgoing Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) secretary general, has emerged as a leading candidate for the chairmanship position.
Matemadanda, currently serving as Zimbabwean Ambassador to Mozambique, has been given approval by the party leadership to vie for the top post.
Scheduled to take place in the Midlands province from June 14 to 16, preparations for the congress are already underway. The previous congress occurred in 2013 in Masvingo, where Christopher Mutsvangwa and his executive were elected to lead the association.
Although the ZNLWVA congress was supposed to convene every five years, various challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, concurrent Zanu-PF congresses and conferences, and last year's harmonized elections caused delays. However, the upcoming elective congress aligns with the association's constitutional obligations.
The ZNLWVA executive, under the guidance of its political commissar Joel Mureremba, is mobilizing members nationwide for the forthcoming congress. Matemadanda expressed his commitment to serving the interests of war veterans through proper channels.
"I declared my interest in the chairmanship race two to three months ago. I am a contender and hope to emerge victorious. Regardless of the outcome, I pledge my support to the winning candidate, provided they align with the values of Zanu-PF," he stated.
Matemadanda emphasized his allegiance to the President, the party leadership, and the Government, citing his roots in ZIPRA and ZANLA, which merged to form Zanu-PF.
