A man from Mberengwa District in the Midlands Province has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for fatally stabbing a rival suitor two years ago following a dispute over a woman who ended their relationship.
Hardlife Mudzingwa of Duna Village under Chief Mataruse was convicted of murder with constructive intent by Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Bongani Ndlovu, who is on circuit in Gweru. Mudzingwa had pleaded not guilty.
In delivering the sentence, Justice Ndlovu condemned Mudzingwa's actions, stating that they warranted a lengthy prison term. He expressed concern over the normalization of violence in the Midlands Province and emphasized the need to address it.
According to the prosecution led by Ms. Chipo Hungwe, Mudzingwa had an altercation with the deceased, Blessing Mxotshwa, resulting in Mudzingwa stabbing him with a homemade knife on the collarbone and left shoulder on April 8, 2022, at Tokwe Valley in Shurugwi.
Makonese, the woman at the center of the dispute, testified that she had ended her relationship with Mudzingwa and was now involved with Mxotshwa, which angered Mudzingwa. She recounted the events of the day, stating that Mudzingwa forcibly entered her home and attacked Mxotshwa, leading to the fatal stabbing.
After discovering Mxotshwa's body, Makonese reported the incident to her neighbor and then informed Ishmael Mudzana, leading to Mudzingwa's arrest.
Mudzingwa was represented by Mr. Tafadzwa Komboni of Jumo Mashoko and Partners during the trial.
