Last week, two Harare municipal police officers were hospitalized at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals after being assaulted with wooden sticks and sjamboks by vendors in the central business district.
Kelvin Chikono (40) and Dereck Nyeke (33), the vendors involved, appeared before Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera over the weekend, facing charges of public violence.
They were remanded in custody and are scheduled to apply for bail today.
According to the State, on May 31, Chikono, Nyeke, and others were selling various products along Cameroon Street when they witnessed municipal police officers and Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) arresting illegal vendors and confiscating their goods.
After dispersing momentarily, they regrouped and confronted the officers, organizing themselves into three groups. They then launched a violent attack on the municipal officers using wooden sticks and sjamboks, resulting in three officers being seriously injured.
While ZRP officers managed to arrest Chikono and Nyeke, the other suspects managed to flee the scene.
