Harare West legislator Joanah Mamombe was ordered to present her defense after the close of the State's case, while her co-accused Cecilia Chimbiri, Lovejoy Chitengu, and Stanley Manyenga were acquitted.
Harare regional magistrate Taurai Manuwere acquitted Mamombe's co-accused on charges of staging an illegal demonstration during the COVID-19 lockdown due to insufficient evidence.
Manuwere noted that none of the State's seven police witnesses could directly link the accused to the protest, nor did they produce any placards as evidence.
Mamombe, however, was found guilty of breaching the peace during the same gathering. The State accused her and the others of contravening COVID-19 regulations by holding a demonstration at Warren Park 1 shopping center on May 13, 2020.
The demonstration involved around 75 to 100 people, allegedly protesting against the lockdown extension. The State claimed they were intercepted and dispersed by the police.
Despite the charges, the magistrate ruled there was no concrete evidence proving the involvement of Mamombe's co-accused in the unlawful gathering.
