Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube emphasized the importance of addressing food loss and waste to enhance food and nutrition security, particularly in light of Zimbabwe's challenges with an El NiƱo-induced drought affecting the 2023-24 cropping season.
Speaking at the Zimbabwe Investment and Capital Markets Conference in the UK, Ncube highlighted agriculture as a key investment opportunity, given its significant contribution of 12% to GDP and the country's favorable climatic conditions and ample land resources.
He underscored the potential in commercial farming, agribusiness, and value-added processing, advocating for investments in irrigation, mechanization, and export-oriented agriculture to alleviate poverty and enhance prosperity.
Ncube also noted the sector's role in combating climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Amid forecasts of poor crop yields, high food prices, and food insecurity, he stressed the need for significant maize imports to meet Zimbabwe's cereal demands for the upcoming consumption year.
