Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona addressed the National Assembly, urging Parliament to endorse a road accident fund aimed at compensating individuals involved in road accidents across Zimbabwe. He emphasized the critical need to support road users and outlined measures to reduce road carnage, highlighting the importance of post-crash management and assessing accident impacts.
Mhona announced plans to introduce principles in Cabinet for the establishment of the road accident fund, which would provide compulsory insurance cover to all road users in Zimbabwe. This cover includes indemnity insurance for those causing accidents and personal injury/death insurance for accident victims and their families. The fund's responsibilities would encompass rehabilitation and timely compensation for those injured in motor vehicle accidents.
The minister's proposal follows a notable increase in road accidents, particularly in June, prompting concern over road safety, especially on highways. The proposed road accident fund aims to offer two types of cover: personal insurance for victims or their families and indemnity cover for wrongdoers.
Mhona concluded by seeking Parliament's support for the swift enactment of legislation to establish the road accident fund once Cabinet approves the proposals.
