The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is facing scrutiny and calls for transparency regarding its procurement of voting materials for the 2023 elections. Human rights defender Tapiwa Chiriga has requested detailed information from ZEC following allegations of fraud and misuse of funds involving Zanu-PF Parliamentarian Scott Sakupwanya, Wicknell Chivayo, Mike Chimombe, Moses Mpofu, and ZEC Chairperson Priscilla Chigumba.
Reports suggest over US$40 million was paid to Chivayo in a dubious deal for election materials, raising concerns about inflated costs and lack of proper procurement procedures. Chigumba's involvement in meetings with Chivayo, Chimombe, and Mpofu has been highlighted, suggesting potential impropriety.
In response, ZEC has denied having any contract with Chivayo, Chimombe, or Mpofu, asserting that all election materials were procured through legitimate processes and in adherence to procurement regulations. They have challenged anyone with evidence of wrongdoing to come forward.
Chiriga, invoking the Freedom of Information Act and Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act, has formally requested ZEC to disclose all details related to the procurement of ballot printing services, including bidding processes, publication notices, contracts, and approvals.
Meanwhile, the situation has also implicated figures close to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, including his daughter Chido, amid ongoing legal and political fallout surrounding the allegations.
Chivayo, who remains defiant on social media, has been at the center of controversy, boasting about his connections and influence, while Chimombe and Mpofu are currently detained on fraud charges totaling US$80 million.
