Nelson Chamisa's lawyer and close ally, Thabani Mpofu has written to army commander Lt Gen Anselem Sanyatwe demanding that he retracts statements made at a rally where he vowed that 'Zanu-PF will rule until donkeys grow horns' by using 'command voting.'
A video of Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Commander Anselem Sanyatwe declaring his allegiance to ruling Zanu-PF has surfaced online.
Addressing what seems to be a Zanu-PF gathering, Sanyatwe warns those in attendance not to dare vote against the ruling party.
He promises to use force for those against it and brags that as head of the army, what he says goes.
Sanyatwe becomes the third top military official to do so after the late Vitalis Zvinavashe in 2002 and Constantino Chiwenga months before the 2017 coup he later led to secure President Emmerson Mnangagwa's ascent.
Mpofu says, "War heroes don't intimidate civilians, they protect them. Sanyatwe must stick to his constitutional role and leave politics to politicians. The nation deserves a military that safeguards democracy, not one that undermines it. It is in that context that I have written to Sanyatwe."
"Sit down Sanyatwe and while you are at it, learn to dress properly. Today I publicly defy your madness, your unconstitutional madness. You can't threaten us hiding behind your military fatigue. Don't be partisan. Protect all interests. It's a duty! A constitutional duty."
