Gwanda Mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo has launched the 2024 Mayor's Christmas Cheer Fund with a target of raising US$20,000 to support over 250 vulnerable community members. The fundraising initiative, aimed at providing assistance during the festive season, kicked off today at Mount Cazalet Lodge in Gwanda, with representatives from the business community, residents, and other stakeholders in attendance.
This year's target is a slight increase from last year's goal, when around 200 families benefited from the fund, surpassing the initial target of 150. The Mayor's Christmas Cheer Fund is focused on reaching those most in need, including orphans, widows, the elderly, and individuals living with disabilities.
Alderman Moyo emphasized the significance of generosity not just during Christmas but throughout the year. "The festive season is upon us, and it's time to launch the Mayor's Christmas Cheer Fund. We have families in our community who will not be able to enjoy the spirit of Christmas due to financial hardships. The fund aims to support those most in need," he said.
A series of fundraising events will take place leading up to Christmas. Highlights include the Miss Cheer Gwanda pageant, scheduled for November 16, and a business seminar on December 6. Additionally, donation containers will be placed in shops and offices across Gwanda to encourage contributions from the public.
In his address, Mr. Methuseli Moyo, chairperson of the Gwanda Mayor's Christmas Cheer Fund, stressed the importance of engaging a broad range of stakeholders in the fundraising efforts. He also outlined plans to work closely with the Department of Social Welfare, local councillors, churches, and community members to ensure the transparent selection of beneficiaries.
"The need for social welfare is great in our communities, and we will continue to seek partnerships to support those in need. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference," said Alderman Moyo. He also noted that the business seminar would help empower local entrepreneurs and promote economic growth in Gwanda.
Mr. Moyo echoed the Mayor's sentiments, saying that this year's fundraising efforts will be more ambitious than ever. "We are going all out to ensure that we mobilise as many resources as possible. We are encouraging everyone to get involved, whether by donating or helping us reach more people," he said. "Bins will be placed strategically so that anyone and everyone can contribute."
The fundraising program aims to provide tangible support to vulnerable families in Gwanda, helping them experience the joy and warmth of the Christmas season. The town's residents are encouraged to join the initiative by contributing in any way they can, ensuring the success of this year's Christmas Cheer Fund.
