A vendor was arraigned before the court this week facing charges of attempted murder after allegedly pushing a municipal policeman from a moving vehicle during an arrest.
Farai Yobe, a vendor, appeared before Harare Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa on Monday, where he was granted bail of US$200. He was also ordered to report twice a week at ZRP Mbare Police Station as part of his bail conditions.
The court heard that on November 7, 2024, Themba Maudzo, a municipal policeman with the City of Harare, was on routine patrol with his colleagues when they encountered Yobe and his accomplice, Raymond Katyaurere, who were selling mazhanje (a type of fruit) from an open truck.
According to Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, Yobe was informed of his arrest by Maudzo and the other officers, who intended to escort him to the City of Harare's headquarters. However, the situation quickly escalated when Yobe's accomplice, Katyaurere, allegedly pushed Maudzo out of the moving vehicle as it sped away.
The municipal police officers in pursuit were unable to catch up with the fleeing vehicle, and Maudzo fell to the ground, sustaining injuries in the process. The officer suffered bruises on his right hip, right hand, and left shoulder.
The incident was reported to the police, and Maudzo was immediately taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for medical treatment and a formal examination. The matter was subsequently investigated, leading to Yobe's arrest.
Yobe, who faces charges of attempted murder, is currently out on bail, and the case will continue to unfold in the coming weeks.
