Fastjet, ZTA promotes Bulawayo
3 hrs ago | Views
Fastjet, in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA), is driving efforts to position Bulawayo as a leading destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE), unlocking the city's potential as a key player in business tourism.
The initiative aims to enhance Bulawayo's visibility in regional markets, particularly South Africa, by showcasing its facilities and attractions to corporate travel agents.
Promoting Bulawayo's MICE Potential
Fastjet and ZTA have so far facilitated tours for four groups of South African travel agents, allowing them to explore Bulawayo's conferencing infrastructure and unique offerings. The goal is to equip agents with first-hand knowledge to create tailored travel packages for their clients.
ZTA Regional Manager, Mrs. Novuyo Mathonsi, underscored the importance of the partnership, highlighting Bulawayo's readiness to host business events.
"Many are unaware of what Bulawayo offers in terms of meetings and conferencing facilities," said Mrs. Mathonsi. "The South African market, particularly corporate travel agents, must experience our products first-hand to promote them effectively. With three three-star hotels and the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC) offering large halls, we have the capacity for MICE events."
Integrating Business and Leisure Tourism
The strategy also encourages business visitors to experience Bulawayo's cultural and natural attractions. Sites like Matobo National Park provide opportunities for relaxation and exploration beyond conference rooms.
"When people come for meetings, they don't just stay in conference rooms. They visit attractions like the Matopos, which offers breathtaking scenery and upmarket accommodation facilities," Mrs. Mathonsi added.
Positive Reception from Travel Agents
South African travel agents who visited Bulawayo have praised its tourism and hospitality potential.
Ms. Delene Hiepner, Programme Manager at Rennies BCD Travel, expressed her amazement at Bulawayo's offerings.
"I must be honest, it has been incredible. I did not expect this from Zimbabwe. The tourist sites have been fantastic, and, sadly, many people are unaware of them. Bulawayo deserves recognition beyond the usual focus on Victoria Falls," she said.
Another agent, Ms. Saffiyah Rahman, highlighted the city's welcoming atmosphere and cultural richness.
"The people are friendly, and the warm welcome is something our clients would love. One day here is not enough, and we will definitely create tailor-made packages for our clients," she said, adding that Bulawayo could host regional MICE events.
Transforming Bulawayo into a Regional MICE Hub
The partnership between Fastjet and ZTA is seen as a critical step in transforming Bulawayo into a competitive MICE destination. By leveraging its facilities, cultural heritage, and natural attractions, the city aims to attract more regional and international visitors, boosting its economy and enhancing Zimbabwe's profile as a business tourism hub.
This collaborative initiative demonstrates a vision for Bulawayo to diversify its tourism offerings and gain recognition as a dynamic MICE destination in Southern Africa.
