A Plumtree man has been charged with assault after allegedly attacking his wife with a leather belt following a dispute over the absence of relish in their meal.

Golden Malikondwe appeared before Plumtree Magistrate Joshua Nembaware last week facing charges of assault. Prosecutor Selestine Madziwa outlined the events in court, stating that the incident occurred in October this year.

According to the prosecution, Malikondwe returned home late one evening and demanded his share of food. When his wife, Joyce Ngwenya, informed him that she had only prepared sadza and lacked any relish to accompany it, Malikondwe reportedly became enraged.

In the heat of the argument, Malikondwe allegedly assaulted Ngwenya with a leather belt, forcing her to flee the home and seek refuge at a nearby neighbor's house.

Malikondwe's trial is set to begin on Tuesday, and further details are expected to emerge during the proceedings.
