The Supreme Court in Harare has overturned the conviction of Denzel Chikore on charges of rape, bringing an end to the legal battle.
Chikore, represented by his lawyers Liveours Mundieta and Advocate T. Mapuranga, successfully appealed against the High Court's earlier ruling, which had upheld his conviction.
In a judgment released this week, a panel of Supreme Court Judges of Appeal - Justices Mathonsi, Chiweshe, and Mwayera - delivered a unanimous verdict in Chikore's favor.
The court's decision stated:
"The accused is found not guilty and acquitted of the charge of rape."
Chikore's legal team argued that the conviction was based on insufficient evidence and procedural errors. The Supreme Court's ruling marks a significant shift in the case, overturning the decision made by High Court Judges Justice Foroma and Justice Kwenda.
The ruling brings relief to Chikore and his supporters, while the case has drawn public attention to issues surrounding due process and the administration of justice in sexual offense cases.
