A 39-year-old Southlea Park man has been arrested for allegedly raping a pregnant woman he had offered a lift in Harare on Wednesday night.

Andrew Nyaruwembo is accused of luring the 21-year-old victim into his Honda Fit after finding her negotiating for a fare to hire a Tap and Go taxi to her Mabelreign home around 8pm.

According to police, Nyaruwembo pretended to sympathise with the woman because of her pregnancy and offered her free transport. Along the way, he allegedly bought her chips, claiming he was "feeding the baby in her womb."

He then drove and parked near the Civil Court opposite Runhare House, where he allegedly raped the woman once, reportedly using protection. During the encounter, he allegedly told the victim that he had a weakness for pregnant women.

After the incident, Nyaruwembo is said to have stolen US$300 from the woman before dumping her. The two had earlier exchanged contact details, which helped investigators trace him.

The victim reported the case, leading to Nyaruwembo's arrest.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest.

"Police arrested a Southlea Park man for raping a woman in a parked car in the CBD. The complainant was referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical examination," said Insp Chakanza.
