A suspected armed robber died from gunshot wounds on Friday following a dramatic police chase along the Chegutu-Chinhoyi Road, while two alleged accomplices were arrested, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed.
The suspects, identified as Valentine Dipuka, Tafadzwa Mumba, and Tinashe Chimukono, are accused of carrying out a violent robbery near the Newfound Turn-off in Gadzema, Chegutu. According to police, the trio allegedly rammed a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus with a Honda Fit, threatened the driver with machetes, and stole over US$200,000.
Following a tip-off, officers tracked the suspects to Chegutu CBD on September 19, prompting a high-speed chase. Police opened fire when the suspects attempted to flee, eventually immobilising their vehicle. Dipuka and Chimukono were arrested on the spot, while Mumba later died from gunshot wounds at a local hospital.
The ZRP has issued a stern warning to criminal syndicates, stating that confrontations with law enforcement will not be tolerated.
