The Zimbabwe Passengers Association (ZPA) has called for a nationwide spiritual cleansing programme targeting road traffic accident hotspots, urging national spirit mediums to lead the initiative in collaboration with President Emmerson Mnangagwa and cabinet ministers.

ZPA Secretary General Paul Makiwa made the appeal in a statement, citing the persistent loss of lives on roads historically linked to liberation war landmines and spiritual disturbances.

"We know that during the liberation struggle, many lives were lost due to landmines on our roads. Even after independence, we continue to lose lives in these same places. These carnages occur periodically, and we are experiencing more blood harvest timeouts," Makiwa said.

He proposed that national spirit mediums aligned with ancestral figures such as Changamire Domborenyika, Nehanda, and Lozwi King Mike Moyo Mambo should lead the cleansing rituals, supported by the State.

"President Mnangagwa and Minister of Local Government Daniel Garwe should oversee the administrative side, while local mediums like Nevana and Nerupiri lead in their respective provinces," Makiwa added.

He emphasized that local authorities are well aware of the accident black spots in their areas and should coordinate with spiritual leaders to address them.

"What pleases us as passengers is that the Head of State and Minister Garwe know these national spirit mediums, and we know they are working hand in glove with them," he said.

Makiwa warned that unless these rituals are conducted, Zimbabwe will continue to record high numbers of fatal road accidents.
