Police in Masvingo province have arrested a 35-year-old woman, Fadzai Geviza of Village 2, Fair Range, for allegedly killing her three-year-old daughter. Authorities say the tragic incident was allegedly motivated by the suspect's desire to marry her new boyfriend, who reportedly did not want a partner with a child.
According to police, the child was stabbed on the neck with a knife on November 25. Following the incident, Geviza reportedly gave conflicting accounts - first claiming to a neighbour that four unidentified assailants had attacked the child, and later telling the village head that the child had died of natural causes.
Suspicion arose during burial preparations when mourners noticed a deep cut on the child's neck, prompting a report to ZRP Mkwasine and leading to Geviza's arrest.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly killed her daughter to remove what she saw as an obstacle to her new relationship.
The child's body was taken to Chiredzi General Hospital for a post-mortem, and police investigations are ongoing.
