Traffic came to a standstill on Wednesday along the Harare-Bulawayo highway after two trucks collided at the 129km peg between Kadoma and Kwekwe, blocking the roadway and forcing motorists to wait for hours.

Police and fire brigade teams were deployed to the scene and were still working to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow at the time of writing.

Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred around 11am when one of the trucks attempted to avoid a Honda Fit that appeared to have suddenly cut in front of it. In the process, the truck reportedly swerved and was struck by the trailer of the second truck, causing it to topple and block the entire stretch of the road.

"No fatalities were recorded," according to a witness. "The driver was trying to avoid hitting a Honda Fit, but as he swerved his truck was hit by the other one's trailer and then fell, blocking the road."

The latest incident comes barely 24 hours after another fatal accident was recorded along the same road. Three people were killed on Tuesday when a Mercedes-Benz collided with a Honda Fit carrying five passengers, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

The stretch of highway continues to record a rise in traffic-related accidents, raising renewed concerns over road safety, driver behaviour and congestion along one of Zimbabwe's busiest transport corridors.
