The Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection, has issued a Level 2 weather warning for heavy rain, lightning and strong winds expected to affect large parts of Zimbabwe from Sunday, December 21, to Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

In an alert released at 4pm on Friday, authorities said the probability of severe weather conditions is high, although the anticipated impact has been classified as minor. The warning covers all provinces, with heightened concern for flood-prone areas including Masvingo, Manicaland, Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central.

According to MSD forecasts, some areas could receive more than 50 millimetres of rainfall within a 24-hour period. The rains are expected to be accompanied by hail, frequent lightning and strong wind gusts. Meteorologists attribute the conditions to the interaction of warm, moist air with low-pressure systems over the western and northern parts of the country.

Authorities have urged members of the public to take precautionary measures to minimise potential damage and ensure safety. Residents are advised to secure rooftops, tie down loose objects, safeguard livestock and trim overhanging tree branches that could pose a risk during strong winds.

During stormy conditions, the public has been warned against operating machinery or using open vehicles such as tractors. People are also strongly discouraged from entering flooded areas and from using taps or showers during lightning storms.

The Department of Civil Protection said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary, urging communities to remain alert and adhere to safety guidance throughout the warning period.
