A Guruve teacher and businessman, Brighton Mupunga (46), and his girlfriend, Juliet Mujeri (30), have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a five‑day‑old baby.
The pair is assisting police with investigations at Guruve Police Station.
Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the incident.
According to police, the duo allegedly hatched a plan on Friday night to kidnap the baby girl belonging to a 17‑year‑old mother after they had paid her hospital bills.
Mupunga is said to have sent Mujeri to steal the baby at around 10pm, and she reportedly succeeded.
The mother discovered that her newborn had been taken from her room and immediately alerted neighbours. Mupunga was the first to be apprehended, as he had visited the house shortly before the baby went missing.
He was handed over to the police, and officers reportedly found messages on his phone showing communication with Mujeri planning the kidnapping.
Mujeri was arrested minutes later, and the baby was recovered and referred to Guruve Hospital for examination.
