Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Honourable Felix Tapiwa Mhona, on Monday held a press conference at Kaguvi Building to brief stakeholders on the state of Zimbabwe's road network and outline a coordinated strategy for its rehabilitation.

The briefing followed a strategic meeting involving the Minister, key road authorities, ZINARA officials, the Acting Mayor of Harare and Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart, among other stakeholders. Discussions focused on the condition of roads across the country and progress under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2 (ERRP 2).

Minister Mhona said the extension of ERRP 2 into 2024 provides a critical framework for accelerating road rehabilitation works nationwide. He announced that Government will soon roll out new asphalt plants in Harare and Bulawayo to boost capacity and speed up repairs.

"The extension of ERRP 2 gives us continuity and momentum, but Government cannot do this alone," said Minister Mhona. "The success of this programme depends on the collective efforts of all road authorities. We must continue to engage, share ideas and pool resources."

He emphasised the need for closer collaboration between central Government, local authorities and road agencies to ensure consistent standards and efficient use of resources.

The Minister said improved coordination was essential to restoring and maintaining the road network, which plays a key role in supporting economic activity, trade and social services.

Officials present at the meeting agreed on the need to fast-track implementation of agreed interventions, particularly in urban centres where road deterioration has worsened due to heavy traffic and recent rains.
