Barely a week after its commissioning, the newly surfaced 30km Ngungumbane–Mataga Road has claimed the lives of two people following a fatal road traffic accident in the Midlands Province.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident, which occurred on Saturday at around 10pm.

Mahoko said a Mazda Demio, driven by Courage Sigodo (27) of Fortune Park in Mberengwa, was travelling towards Mataga Growth Point with three passengers on board when the vehicle veered off the road near the 9km peg and overturned several times.

Two female passengers, Emilly Charidza (33) of Mataga Growth Point and Constance Manana (29) of Fortune Park, Mberengwa, died on the spot.

The driver and the remaining passenger escaped unhurt.

Inspector Mahoko urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly on newly surfaced roads, and to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations, including avoiding speeding.

The Ngungumbane–Mataga Road was recently commissioned by Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Owen Ncube as part of ongoing road infrastructure improvements in the province.
