Fatalities from train accidents in Zimbabwe rose sharply in 2025, even as the overall number of people hit by trains slightly declined compared to 2024.
According to National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Manager, Mr Andrew Kunambura, last year 25 people were struck by trains, resulting in 11 deaths and 14 injuries. By comparison, 2024 recorded 27 people hit, with only six fatalities.
"This represents an 83.3 percent increase in deaths year-on-year, despite a 7.4 percent decrease in total accidents from 27 in 2024 to 25 in 2025," Mr Kunambura said in an interview with Zimpapers.
The data indicates a worrying trend: while fewer people were involved in train incidents overall, the severity of accidents has increased, resulting in a higher death toll.
Mr Kunambura urged the public to exercise caution around railway lines and highlighted the importance of safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
The NRZ continues to implement safety awareness campaigns and infrastructure improvements to mitigate train-related accidents across the country.
