CSC back in Zimbabwe's beef game

The Cold Storage Commission (CSC) has rolled out an ambitious turnaround programme aimed at reclaiming its position in Zimbabwe's beef industry after years of underperformance. The strategy signals a clear break from previous reform attempts, adopting a hard-edged, results-driven approach anchored on diagnostic reform, export recovery and sustainable growth.

Central to the plan is the recruitment of a seasoned turnaround specialist who will report directly to the CSC Board, a move designed to tighten oversight, strengthen accountability and accelerate decision-making. The programme is structured around clearly defined 100-, 180- and 365-day milestones, each tied to measurable performance indicators and subject to close scrutiny by Treasury and relevant line ministries.

In the short term, CSC will prioritise the restoration of export certification, enhanced regulatory compliance and the stabilisation of cash flows, measures intended to rebuild confidence among cattle producers, financiers and regional export markets.

Beyond immediate recovery, the turnaround programme places renewed focus on farmer engagement, modernised procurement systems and product diversification to strengthen competitiveness across the value chain.

Aligned with Zimbabwe's Vision 2030, officials say the initiative represents the most credible opportunity in years to reposition CSC as a cornerstone of the national beef industry, while supporting rural livelihoods and broader economic development.
