Harare borehole water unsafe

The City of Harare has confirmed that nearly half of the boreholes tested in the city - 47% - are unsafe, raising concerns about cholera and other waterborne diseases. The Department of Health issued a cholera alert, warning that the risk of outbreaks has increased following recent heavy rains, flooding, and sewer overflows in several parts of Harare.

"47% of boreholes tested in Harare showed that the water is unsafe to drink without treating it," the council said, urging residents to rely only on treated, chlorinated, or boiled water, regardless of the source. Authorities also cautioned against consuming water from unprotected wells, shallow boreholes, or areas affected by flooding.

Residents, however, expressed concerns that the warning highlights a broader issue with the city's water supply, noting that the general water quality in Harare is often unsafe for drinking and calling for urgent action to address the risks.
