Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councillor for Ward 15 in Mphoengs, Sydney Ngwenya, has been convicted after stealing US$700 from his ward’s Campfire Committee account.

The 55‑year‑old councillor and his accomplice, Benjamin Ncube (71), were each sentenced to two months in jail by Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware. The sentence was wholly suspended on condition they each pay a US$350 fine.

Magistrate Nembaware also suspended an additional four months on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutor Sheila Nyathi told the court that in 2023, Campfire Mangwe Rural District Council opened a ZB Bank account, with Ngwenya listed as one of the signatories. On 26 March last year, Ngwenya and fellow signatory Ncube withdrew US$700 instead of the approved US$84 for travel expenses.

On 3 May, Bernard Moyo confronted Ngwenya over the excessive withdrawal, and the councillor claimed he had loaned himself the money. A police report was subsequently filed, leading to his arrest.
